Indian shuttler PV Sindhu stormed into the second round at the Badminton Asia Championships with a straight-game victory over Indonesia’s Dinar Dyah Ayustine while Saina Nehwal suffered a defeat at the hands of unseeded Sayaka Sato of Japan.
In the men’s singles, Ajay Jayaram endured a tough battle to emerge victorious 21-18, 18-21, 21-19 against the Chinese fifth seed Tian Houwei. Sindhu, who won a bronze in the 2014 Gimcheon edition, took just 31 minutes to outplay her unseeded opponent 21-8, 21-18 in the first round match at the Wuhan Sports Center Gymnasium in Wuhan on Wednesday.
The seventh seed Saina, who had a 6-1 record in head-to-head ties against Sato before this clash, went down fighting 21-19, 16-21, 18-21 in a match that lasted one hour and eight minutes.The fourth seeded Sindhu has continued her good performance since winning the silver medal at Rio Olympics last year. She had clinched the Syed Modi Grand Prix Gold in January this year before annexing the India Super Series title early this month.The mixed doubles pair of Pranaav Jerry Chopra and N Sikki Reddy put up a brave fight before losing 15-21, 21-14, 16-21 against Chinese top seeds Zheng Siwei and Chen Qingchen in the opening round.Sindhu then reached the quarter-finals at the Singapore Open, where she lost to Olympic champion Carolina Marin.
