India opener, Murali Vijay has been ruled out of the three-Test series against Sri Lanka that starts on July 26 with a wrist injury. Shikhar Dhawan will replace Vijay for the series, the BCCI confirmed through a media release.The All-India Senior Selection Committee on Monday named Shikhar Dhawan as the replacement for injured Murali Vijay in the Test team, which is scheduled to travel to Sri Lanka for a three-match Test series,” BCCI said through a media release. Vijay played with a fractured wrist during part of India’s marathon 13-match home Test season. After playing the first Test against Australia, he missed the Bengaluru Test and then returned for the last two matches of the series.After the season, Vijay travelled to the UK for surgery on his injured wrist which forced him to miss the tenth edition of the IPL.After undergoing rehabilitation, he resumed practice, but complained of pain in his right wrist during a preparatory match. Vijay, who had suffered a wrist injury during Australia’s tour of India, has complained of pain in his right wrist, while playing a preparatory match. The BCCI medical team has therefore advised that Vijay should continue his rehabilitation program,” the release stated.Vijay scored 771 runs in the 12 Tests he played at home, with three hundreds, while Dhawan got only one Test and scored 17 and one, against New Zealand in Kolkata. The selectors preferred Gambhir and later Mukund over the left-hander over the course of the season. With Vijay now ruled out, this will be another opportunity for Dhawan to resurrect his Test career.It remains to be seen which opening combination India go in with as Abhinav Mukund was chosen as the third opener in the squad.
Mukund was recalled to the Indian team after a gap of nearly 6 years, for the home series against Australia and played the Bengaluru Test after Vijay missed out. After Vijay’s return for the Ranchi Test, Mukund made way. He was later selected for the Sri Lanka tour – as standby to the regular pair of Vijay and Rahul.The Sri Lanka-India Test series starts on the 26th of July at Galle, before moving to the SSC, Colombo on the 3rd of August.
